During the offseason there are
going to be a multitude of theories about who should go where and what teams
need what positions filled with better, more substatntial talent. Of course the
Rays are no exception. One of the big
names being tossed out there, which may be a surprise to some Rays fans, is none
other than James Shields. Now James Shields has had such an amazing season, 11
complete games, 4 shutouts, 2.82 ER and 225 strikeouts that it’s hard to
believe we would have to face next year without him. According to this Sean McDonnell piece there
exists a potential trade option for the Rays: James Shields for Logan Morrison
(from the now Miami Marlins). Morrison presents a host of position potential.
Not only is Morrison capable of covering first, which McDonnell feels Kotchman
is not fully capable of but he can provide protetion for Longoria at third and
could possibly be available for left field, his current position with the
marlins. But why would we even look at him now when he isn’t available for
arbitration until 2014? Perhaps it’s because the need to tighten up our defense
is great and Morrison would present as a possible pivotal player. While the
Rays would be crazy to deal Shields out without a significantly promising offer,
a more realistic and less stingly trade
could be Wade Davis. Would Shields for
Morrison be a worthy trade for the Rays or would you rather see Wade Davis
sacrificed?
